Plants of Bentsen Palm
Firespike is one of about 40 species of herbs or shrubs all native to the Americas. Though not native to the RGV, it has highly adapted to our salts, intense summer heat, and other harsh conditions. Grown for its lush tropical foliage and soil tolerance in South Texas perennial gardens. Although hardy further north, early frosts can spoil its fantastic crimson spikes in late fall. This is one of the FEW shade tolerate nectar sources for our local and migrating hummingbirds! Visit Mr. and Mrs. Cypcar for propagation advice!
